Mastering the details

Overview on January 4th, 2010

Knowing how much to eat begins with knowing how much energy you need for the day, which begins with knowing your Basal Metabolic Rate, or BMR. Lean Me Pro calculates your BMR for you using two formulas widely used throughout the medical, dietary, and fitness industries. Each formula requires age and bodyweight, logged in the Details tab. The more advanced formula also requires lean body mass, which Lean Me calculates automatically using your body fat percentage logs, also in the Details tab. For body fat percentage, Lean Me includes an advanced calculator using your preference of 3-site or 7-site skin fold measurements. Lean Me also allows you to enter body fat percentage directly, and if possible, displays estimates using both YMCA and US Navy estimates of body fat based on various data, including body circumference measurements, giving you a small glimpse of the level of interaction among Lean Me’s various features.

Aside from your metabolism calculator, the My Body section of the Details Tab includes logs for body weight, body fat percentage, body circumferences, daily sleep, blood pressure, blood sugar, and resting heart rate. It also includes a photo log where each photo is automatically tagged with your body weight, abdominal circumference, and body fat percentage for the date entered, as well as a simple daily journal for tracking your mood and other factors that might be influencing your diet and fitness choices. You can also create Diet Cycles here, which are energy budget presets with specific target ratios for carbohydrates, protein, and fat.

You can customize Lean Me’s many functions in the Settings section. In Basic Settings you can choose whether you want to display Metric units or US Standard units, and whether you prefer to display energy in kilocalories (Calories) or kilojoules. In the Advanced Settings section you can control a wide variety of advanced features, including password protecting all or part of Lean Me, turning on energy badges to display your remaining energy budget without navigating to the Today page, turning off log sorting by meal type, switching between adaptive and simple mode, and more.

In the Maintenance section you can email your data out to yourself for long term archiving, or to your doctor, dietitian, or personal trainer for detailed feedback. With the simple format option all the selected log types will be grouped together by day and sent as a simple text file. Or for importing your data into Microsoft Excel (Importing Into Excel) or other spreadsheet applications, you can choose to send your data in a delimited format, and each log type will be included as a separate attachment.
